The bowl of chips is actually being created as part of a larger project which is a cake for my mums birthday, I will also be posting individual tutorials for all of the elements of this cake so stay tuned!
Step 1 - Materials Needed
- Cornflour or Icing Sugar (Also known as confectioners Sugar)
- White fondant
- Flower Foam Pad(Also known as cell pad)
- Ball tool (or dessert spoon)
- Toothpick
- Small paintbrush
- Fondant knife
- Rolling pin
- Yellow food colour (or pale yellow fondant if you have it)
- Water
- Small lid (I used the top of a vanilla essence bottle)
- Piping tip (I used a Wilton #10)
Step 2 - Making The Bowl
Think of how large you want your bowl to be. In the below 3rd picture, you can see that I have used a lid as a template for getting the round shape of the bowl, I have just used the lid off a vanilla essence bottle, you may want to go smaller or larger than this.
Take the white fondant and knead with your fingers until soft and pliable. TIP: Whilst using fondant your hands and the table can become sticky so to alleviate this use a small amount of cornflour or icing sugar on your hands, table and rolling pin - not too much though as the fondant can dry out quicker!
Roll the white fondant into a ball and slightly flatten with your palm. Using your rolling pin, roll out the fondant ball slightly into a flat disc.
Place the round lid in the middle of the fondant disc. You want to have the flat fondant disc larger than the lid in the middle as shown.
Using your fingers, gently push the edges of the fondant disc up the sides of the lid to start forming your bowl shape.

Once in the right shape, remove the lid from the middle of the fondant and gently thin and flatten the edges of the bowl with your fingers until you are happy with the shape.
Next, get a bit of white fondant and colour it pale yellow. TIP: Only use a very small amount of yellow food or gel colouring as a little goes a long way (learnt this one the hard way). You kind of want to end up with a lemon colour.
I use a toothpick to smear a small amount of colour onto the fondant and knead, then I can see if I am happy with the colour..if not just add a little more colour until you get the desired colour.
Take a small piece of the yellow fondant and roll out into a small disc to to fit inside the bowl (this is so that you won't see any white on the bottom of the bowl and then you won't have to make as many chips/crisps)
Using your paintbrush, paint a little bit of water inside the white bowl to stick in your yellow disc, the water will act as glue but only use a very small amount as the water will turn the fondant tacky. Place the yellow disc into the bottom of the white bowl.
Step 3 - Making the Chips/Crisps
Next roll out the fondant with the rolling pin until quite thin, then using the pointy end of the piping tip, cut out small circles from the yellow fondant. TIP: To push the fondant circle out, use the end of a paintbrush and gently push out (I do stress gently).
Continue to make as many fondant circles as you think you will need for the chips/crisps.
Place the fondant circles onto the foam pad and using your ball tool (you can also use the back of a dessert spoon) thin out the fondant circles.
Once the circles are thinned out, use your knife tool to make small lines along the circle to resemble the lines of a chip (you could also skip this step if you wanted just plain ones with no lines). By doing this not only do the chips/crisps look more realistic texture wise, the ends also curl up during this process making them look even more realistic shape wise.
Next place your chips/crisps inside the white bowl arranging to cover the entire bowl, you may also want to use a little a water to stick the chips down (again only the smallest bit of water). You now have your bowl of chips/crisps!
Thanks for reading, from the Sweet Constitution.
